In 1987 my dad, Phil Kotula, decided he would learn more about business by running a company, than going to graduate school to get his M.B.A. He made a pivotal decision and invested his entire $25,000 tuition into a Minuteman Press franchise. He was my age, 23 years old, so I reflect on my life growing up in the printing business.

As a young kid, I didn’t understand a lot of what he did, but it was very clear that he took immense pride in two aspects of his life: his work and his children. It was important to him to stay humble, so he worked hard and developed a strategy to differentiate his shop from the competition. He was gutsy and determined to make it successful, and the company grew from a modest 1200 square foot shop at the Four Seasons Mall in Plymouth, to a cutting-edge, technology driven, print marketing company that was able to provide marketing and branding support to businesses of all sizes. This strategic shift allowed him to rebrand his company as The MPX Group.

My dad has always made sure to surround himself with a team of exceptional people. His well-known quote, “My job is to hire people who are smarter than me,” remains a guiding principle to this day. Suzanne Curtis, a valued 34-year veteran of the team shared her thoughts on working with my dad. She said, “One of the most rewarding aspects of being part of Phil’s team has been the flexibility and open-door policy he maintains. He is always available to listen and support us. Moreover, Phil trusts each of us to excel in our respective roles, allowing us the freedom to perform to the best of our abilities.” I feel lucky to have grown up watching my dad run his company. He continues to add people and services that help businesses market and brand their business better than ever. He taught me to work hard, surround myself with good people and never be satisfied. It’s about so much more than print.
